Compost is what results from the combination of plant and animal-based organic materials with the addition of some air, water, and nitrogen. Decomposition of such substances occurs naturally in most cases. The most notable exceptions are landfills or areas with extreme climates, where decomposition still happens, but more slowly. Many people who are trying to “live green” use compost for gardening and agriculture as a natural way to enrich soil fertility and encourage healthy roots in the plants that they grow.
Anyone with a few extra square feet, even out on a deck, can produce compost, which makes it a feasible choice for people with limited living space. A compost bin is your best bet for participation in this process if you live in a small home, apartment, condominium or mobile home.
